Societal systems safety studies encompass the systematic study of how different actors influence a society's ability to maintain critical societal functions, to protect the life and health of the citizens and to meet their basic needs in a variety of stress situations. Moreover, the research area also involves normative efforts to design methods, procedures, structures, etc. to enhance various actors' ability to anticipate, monitor, respond to, and learn from crises and disasters.
There are four sub-areas within Societal systems safety studies:
Analysis of risk and vulnerability
Capability assessment
Critical societal functions
