Tactics and methodology to facilitate rescue operations during underground fires

The project, Tactics and methodology to facilitate rescue operations during underground fires (TMU), ended in 2014. It was a joint research project between Lund University, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden and Mälardalen University.

The TMU project aim was to develop rescue techniques to deal with the emergencies that can occur in underground structures. This applies first and foremost rail tunnels, road tunnels and underground garages. As a part of this project a decision support and planning tool, was developed. This tool can be used to assess fire services intervention capability during a tunnel fire and passenger evacuation from a train in the tunnel. The software, TuFT (Tunnel Fire Tools) also includes a fire dynamics component determining the fire conditions at a specified location in the tunnel. The research project was funded by MSB – Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
