e-Murray: Modelling requirements for an open-access multiphysics approach to planning of urban evacuations caused by wildfire disasters

Triggered by the recent emergency evacuation of the tens of thousands of citizens of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, when the population was suddenly threaten by a large wildfire, this project contributes to build more resilient communities. The project received funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). e-Murray seeks to build a novel computational simulation toolkit that will aid in the planning, preparation and training of a community near wildland when attacked by possible fires. The project identifies the requirements for the toolkit based on multi-physics phenomena, combining fire spread, traffic flows and pedestrian movement all at the urbanscale. The toolkit will be developed under an open-access approach to maximize transparency of what the toolkit is made of and to allow any community to use it without commercial restrictions or resource limitations. e-Murray will pave the way to better planning of safe and quick urban evacuations caused by wildfire disasters.

A cross-disciplinary International consortium has been built to fulfill the objectives of e-Murray. This includes the Fire Protection Research Foundation at NFPA (FPRF) in the USA, which serves as funding administrator and provides support for the dissemination of the results. The research consortium includes the Division of Fire Safety Engineering at Lund University in Sweden (LU), which serves as scientific leader of the consortium, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Imperial College London in the UK (ICL) and the National Research Council in Canada (NRCC).
